Search and Retrieval

You can perform search and retrieval operations across the set of PDF documents included in this release. To make use of this feature, you need to have Adobe's Acrobat Search tool available on your system.

For Acrobat version 2, the Search tool is not included with the free Acrobat Reader software, but is available in some of Adobe's commercial packages, such as Acrobat for Workgroups. In Acrobat for Workgroups, the Search tool is provided as a plug-in that works under the Acrobat Exchange program.

For Acrobat version 3, which is expected to be available in November 1996, the Search tool will be integrated in the free Acrobat Reader software.

Searching Using Acrobat 2

• Start up Acrobat Exchange.
• If you are searching this document set for the first time, you need to specify the location of the index Acrobat uses to facilitate quick search and retrieval. Under the Tools menu, on the Search submenu, issue the command Indexes. On the Index Selection dialog box that appears, click the button labeled "Add...". Using the "Add Index" dialog box, specify the following index file located under the MATLAB root directory:

  The selected index, labeled "MathWorks Online Documentation", with its checkbox checked, should now appear in the Index Selection dialog box. Click OK to complete the selection.
• Having selected the index, you can now perform searches. Under the Tools menu, on the Search submenu, issue the command Query. This brings up the Adobe Acrobat Search dialog box. In the text area labeled "Find Results Containing Text", enter the word you want to search for. Then click the Search button to initiate the search. Acrobat responds by displaying the "Search Results" dialog box, listing all documents in which query was found. Double-click on a document name to open the document. Acrobat opens the document to the page containing the word you searched for, which is highlighted. You can move forward to the next match for your query by using the Tools > Search > Next command.
